Climate Calamity

January 2, 2009

climate No one seems to be paying much attention to the warmth.
In this second day of a new year, the biggest problem facing the US — and the world — is not the financial meltdown, not Gaza, and not President-Elect Obama’s abs, but the weather.

And it ain’t getting any better.
Climate change is like an obvious sore thumb — right there at the end of the hand, but ignored.
Naysayers and skeptics — which includes all of Decider George’s government — have dismissed a lot of this tear in the fabric of humanity’s habitat and look elsewhere or even to industry/technology to make right the planet.

Just this past October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in a new report claimed the panel’s report from 2007 is now worthless — the effect of climate change is worsening.
And now, in a piece out this morning, a survey of science types has found that earth may have already gone past the tipping point and it’s time for ‘Plan B:’

  • An emergency “Plan B” using the latest technology is needed to save the world from dangerous climate change, according to a poll of leading scientists carried out by The Independent.
The collective international failure to curb the growing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has meant that an alternative to merely curbing emissions may become necessary.

Levels of CO2 have continued to increase during the past decade since the treaty (Kyoto) was agreed and they are now rising faster than even the worst-case scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations body.
In the meantime the natural absorption of CO2 by the world’s forests and oceans has decreased significantly.
Most of the scientists we polled agreed that the failure to curb emissions of CO2, which are increasing at a rate of 1 per cent a year, has created the need for an emergency “plan B” involving research, development and possible implementation of a worldwide geoengineering strategy.

This “geo-engineering” scheme would include such things as injecting the air with particles to reflect sunlight and creating low clouds over the oceans to positioning giant mirrors in space to deflect sunlight.
What the shit?

If the world keeps putting the climate on the back burner until it’s too late, then the entire stove will explode — leaving Decider George all alone sitting with his feet up in Dallas.
