Typewriter Blues — the Suck-Hole-Ness of News

December 16, 2014

newsmanStars and a mist-shrouded moon, looking like a nicely-trimmed toenail, hanging above a little section of California’s north coast, and here early Tuesday, another day in the life.

In-and-out of the crazy-weird world of journalism nearly 40 years, plus as a writer, I’ve easily become a way-more-than-an-enthusiast for current events, especially in this techno-peculiar age where news never, ever stops.

An addict, maybe, but way-sick of the bad blare.

This morning’s shit high-point so far is the massacre in that Pakistani school — reportedly 130 people, most of them children, were killed (at last count) by some asshole-suicide Taliban ‘intent on killing older students there,’ and anybody else, it figures.
One wonders, though, would Dick Cheney abide the killing of children?

Only a school slaughter could knock a still-at-large ‘active shooter’ in a killing spree in USA Philadelphia suburbs:

Bradley William Stone of Pennsburg killed his ex-wife and her mother, grandmother and sister, as well as the sister’s husband and 14-year-old daughter, said District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.
But Stone didn’t harm his two daughters, who were living with his ex-wife.
He took them to a neighbor’s residence in Pennsburg, the last place he was seen, Ferman said.

The guy was still being hunted as I type.

And that shit kicked back a notch, the horror story from down under, which was blurted out over the weekend and came quickly to conclusion: ‘After the intense drama, Australians mourned Katrina Dawson, a 38-year-old mother of three, and Tori Johnson, the 34-year-old manager of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe. Both were killed in the siege.’
The shooter here, a known nut: ‘Australian police had a long list of run-ins with gunman Monis, including dozens of alleged sexual assaults on women stemming from his services as a spiritual healer. Among the most serious allegations brought against Monis was accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.’

Yet in lieu of guns — Australia has some of the strictest gun laws in the world.

Anyway, the point of the three above news blurbs was to heighten the total-suck-hole-ness of our current events age — seemingly, we’ve somehow slipped into a new barbaric period, even with an intense/immense technology, and shootings, massacres, be-headings (even of children), and such horrors are played out constantly in an unsatiable 24/7 news cycle.
A lot of children involved with the carnage.
And last week adding to the suck-hole-ness, was public ‘mushroom cloud’ over the ‘CIA Torture Report,’ a sad, not-so-shocking, yet still awful sick shit, in a narrative of how just a handful some real assholes could bring great shame to all Americans…and the sad, depressing knowledge that none of the folks involved will ever be brought to justice only intensifies the suck-hole-ness.

Every day I try to post at least one story a day about something found to be of interest — war, politics, climate, even movies, songs and poets — and aggravating and frustrating to be saddened beyond writing, not have the stomach to type out a few words about something. Writing is a personal engine, driving me forward, and been that way since about age 12 (this writing-craving was fairly public by high school, as I was elected ‘Class Poet’ for my graduating class).
So an impediment to writing is red-flagged within my brain stem — and didn’t like it — as the ugliest news just congested themselves and clogged the pipes, or whatever. Yesterday, it took a couple of bowls and a trip to SafeWay to disassemble the packed membranes and pulled it together to bang out a couple of posts later in the day.

This morning, the Pakistani kids, but WTF?
Since the new normal is a form of suck-hole-ness, one must deal with it!
